Choosing the right memory care option for a loved one with dementia can be overwhelming. For Jay and his Mother Jean, Meadowview of Davenport’s memory care neighborhood offered the right combination of comfort, support and community.
When Jean was looking for an independent living community in the Quad Cities area, she chose Meadowview of Davenport for its inviting and intimate feel.
“Of the communities we toured, Mom was most receptive of going to Meadowview of Davenport because she thought it was a cozy atmosphere,” her son Jay says.
As time passed and Jean’s care needs changed, she transitioned from independent living to assisted living, and now memory care. Through each phase, the Meadowview team supported her with compassion and personalized care.
Transitioning to Memory Care
While Jean enjoyed her independent and assisted living experiences, her dementia began to progress. She started needing more support and help with daily tasks. It became evident that a change of setting would benefit her.
“She wasn’t really taking care of herself,” Jay says. “She needed more direction. She needed people to do the basic necessities.”
Meadowview of Davenport’s executive director and director of health services suggested that memory care might be the best fit. Jay says they were right.
“She’s done absolutely fantastic,” Jay says. “She’s thriving.”
Personalized Support for Daily Living
During her time in memory care, Jean has received focused support that helps her manage daily life more comfortably. After a back injury in independent living, the staff helped her manage pain and made sure she received consistent care.
“She’s managing pain, eating three times a day, sleeps well and socializes,” Jay says. “It’s been a great experience.”
Her care team helps with other tasks and Jean appreciates and is close with those who help her.
Meaningful Memory Care Activities
Jean and other residents stay engaged through a variety of memory care activities designed to be both enjoyable and stimulating. One of her favorite pastimes is watching movies.
“Mom was happy to see they had movie night,” Jay says. “What (administrator) Sarah Coy told me was that she was asking about having themed movie nights. They implemented that.”
Other favorite activities include tending to flowers, practicing putting on the golf green, and participating in collaborative art projects. Meadowview even partnered with a local pottery studio; an experience Jean truly enjoyed.
“Mom enjoys activities where she can use her artistic ability and color outside the lines,” Jay says.
Changing Perceptions About Memory Care
Jay admits he once held reservations about memory care.
“I always had misgivings about memory care,” he says. “There’s such a stigma attached to it.”
Jay does not believe that should be the case. He and Jean rave about Meadowview of Davenport’s memory care.
“Meadowview of Davenport is like a 5-star hotel,” Jay says. “Mom has called it a resort. It’s clean, new and well-kept.”
Jay encourages those considering senior living for themselves or a loved one to do their research. And, he believes they have a great memory care option in the Quad Cities.
“I think they would gravitate toward Meadowview of Davenport for the same reasons we did,” he says.
A Sense of Family and Trust
Jean gets along well with her fellow residents and has formed strong bonds with the care team. That gives Jay peace of mind.
“One of the best things about Meadowview of Davenport is I know Mom is being taken care of,” he says. “They treat her like family. She treats them like family.”
For that reason and many others, Jay is proud to speak highly of this community.
“I can’t say enough good things,” he says. “I’m really impressed with the whole atmosphere and all the people there. They do a really good job.”
